Background of the Study
Government support plays a vital role in the development and sustainability of Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs), particularly those led by women. In Nigeria, women entrepreneurs face specific challenges, such as limited access to credit, social norms, and inadequate financial training, which can hinder the development of sound accounting practices. Ogun State, one of Nigeria’s industrial hubs, has seen a growing number of women-led SMEs, particularly in manufacturing and retail sectors. However, these businesses often struggle with financial reporting, transparency, and overall accounting management. Government programs aimed at supporting women entrepreneurs, including grants, subsidies, and training initiatives, can significantly improve the accounting practices of these businesses. This study will examine how government support has influenced the accounting practices of women-led SMEs in Ogun State, focusing on the effectiveness of such interventions in improving financial management.
Statement of the Problem
Women-led SMEs in Ogun State face challenges in maintaining proper accounting systems due to limited access to finance, lack of formal education in accounting, and gender-specific barriers. This study seeks to evaluate how government support influences the accounting practices of women-led SMEs, specifically focusing on the areas of financial transparency, reporting, and decision-making.
